Dragons are now officially best sellers!
According to the Christian Booksellers Association, a couple of fantasy novels about dragons have made it to the best-seller list. Raising Dragons is the number three best-selling book for young adults in the January list, and Tears of a Dragon is number seven. Here is a link for the list: http://www.cbaonline.org/TrackingLists/yck.jsp?w=t When the list changes (around the twentieth of January), that link might lead to an updated list.
I am so thankful! After years of trying to get these books published, I found a small publisher who was willing to take big risk and reintroduce fantasy to Christian youth. Now, the market has proved that we accurately measured the need for books like these.
What do I mean by that? Take note that these are the only two novels in the list. Fiction rarely makes this list at all. I think this makes a huge statement about the desire for Christian fantasy in the market. Young people crave the adventure and excitement of fantasy literature, and parents want them to be safe while they fly away on these adventures in their minds. They want to know that they won’t encounter ideas that will rob their souls of goodness and virtue.
I think parents have learned not only that these books won’t pillage souls, they will actually infuse their children with spiritual nourishment in a way they will never forget. Fantasy provides this unforgettable infusion better than any other genre. It creates lasting images that carry their import for years and years, bringing internal reminders of courage, faithfulness, and charity.
My hope is that many publishers will grab this opportunity, to open the doors to more Christian-themed fantasy. Still, I also hope they will be careful and take on quality novels rather than picking up anything similar in order to make a buck. It would be damaging to our cause if a poor fantasy novel comes out and flops, in both market and critical acceptance.
Testimony
Time: If you would like your testimony included in my newsletter, please
let me know how the Dragons in our Midst series has improved your spiritual
life. I’ll choose one from the messages I receive during the month.
Dear Mr. Davis,
Hi! My name is Elliot, and I would like to tell you that
your books are just as good as “The Lord of the Rings”, “The Hobbit”, and the
entire “Chronicles of Narnia” series! I read from book one straight to book
three when they came out, and at that time book four hadn’t been released yet.
So I waited, and waited, and waited, and finally resorted to ordering the book!
I read the fourth book, and realized that the series was over, and felt like I
had lost my best friend. (Which is impossible though, because I can’t lose
God!) I refused to let myself believe that the series was over, and decided to
go back to old memories and read the series again! I can still share Billy’s
pain of feeling ostracized from normality when he found out about his dragon
traits, and still jump up and down cheering for Bonnie when she decked that
rotten Adam Lark right in the face! When I found out about your website, I flew
there as fast as I could! When I found out about the prequel and “Oracles of
Fire” series, I jumped up, screamed and yelled in laughter and joy on the
inside! (I couldn’t out loud because my mom was on the phone!)
I would like to say one more thing on closing, since its
Your loving fan,
Elliot
