1. What is the
reading level for these books? Our target age range is
10 to 16 years old. We have found that some younger children who are
excellent readers have been able to handle the books. Dragons in
Our Midst books are perfect "read aloud" material for family
times. We have also heard from older teens and adults who tells us
that they enjoy the books as well. There is a great amount of depth,
even hidden mysteries, built into the books, so older, astute
readers find insight and wisdom. 2. Aren't dragons a symbol
of Satan? Why would you use dragons in the story? Aren't they evil?
The Bible uses a dragon to symbolize Satan, but God also
describes Leviathan as one of his greatest creatures in Job 41, and
this creature sounds remarkably like a dragon. We shouldn't be
surprised that a dragon, with its strength and ferocity, is used
to explain the devil's tenacity in attacking God's people. But does
such a symbol mean that all dragons are evil?
Satan can pose as an angel of light, but certainly we are not to
regard all angels of light as evil. Humans can reflect every wicked
attribute of Satan, yet they can also reflect many of God's
qualities. It would be wrong to assume that all men are desperately
evil just because some choose to follow the path of depravity.
This series assumes that some dragons are evil, and some are
good, and it follows a symbolic parallel to angels. Some angels are
true to God, and some are fallen, and so it is with the dragons in
these books.
3. I heard there is a transformation of dragons into humans
in the story. Aren't such transformations related to occult
practices?
While some occult practices seem to describe animal to human to
animal transformations, we should recognize that some activities of
evil people are not necessarily evil in and of themselves. It is the
reason and the objective of the activities that make them evil.
Satanists worship. Does that mean that we should not? It is whom we
worship and the reasons for worship that make it good or evil. We
need to be careful not to label a practice evil simply because an
evil group is using it. If we did, we would not be able to pray or
sing, feast or fast.
God formed man from the dust of the ground. Jesus said God is
able to raise up descendants to Abraham from stones. Certainly He
could also form a man from other objects, even dragons.
4. Is there any magic or witchcraft in the books?
All supernatural power in the first book, Raising Dragons,
is clearly shown to be from God. There is no magic or witchcraft at
all. The third book introduces a character who has unusual, dark
powers, but she is obviously evil. All forces of darkness are clearly shown to be from
an evil source. All power for good in this series is from God.
5. Why do you use the fantasy genre?
For a defense of using fantasy, see my article,
Fantasy and the
Heart of a Child.
6. Will there be more dragons books?
After the Oracles of Fire series is finished, I'm not sure. If
I have more ideas for good stories, maybe. We will just have
to wait and see.
